Collection: From a Letter, Selected by Ramsay Kolber (online exhibition)

About the exhibition

“Take pictures of own pictures through pictures of other people...”

This phrase and the exhibition title, “From a Letter”, are taken from a poetic text or potential manifesto written by the Swiss artist Dieter Roth. In 1966, the text appeared in a slim anthology of international writings, so-called Astronauts of Inner-Space, published by Stolen Paper Review Editions, a small imprint based out of San Francisco.

“...the symmetries of form symmetries of sense...”

Like that text, the works collected here offer the power and potential of personal intervention, represented through both material and linguistic means. In this way, symmetry becomes a form of lateral exchange: a discerning relationship to the world in which we live, our surroundings, or a reflection of ourselves.

“...taken out of books posters written letter etc.”

The works build upon and grow out of the everyday. In doing so, the included artists show that our environments can continually be the source of our own creation, and with this personal vision, we can always build anew.
